The Bachelors degree programme in Mathematics started during the academic year 1981-82 with two sections, one in Tamil medium and the other in English medium, each having a sanctioned strength of 30 students and 6 faculties. The interest shown by the students in pursuing higher education in Mathematics made us to develop as a post graduate department from the academic year 2013-14. The department was recognised to admit 40 students in M.sc Mathematics and four additional faculty positions were created. In order to organise the courses efficiently a separate, well equipped computer lab was launched funded by UGC, facilitated with 12 PCs. This is possible only because of hard work and workaholic nature of our faculties. As our college is situated at the border of Andhra Pradesh, though the syllabus and curriculum for the courses are developed by the board of Mathematics, University Of Madras, we provide TELUGU as a language paper for those who are from Andhra Pradesh and at the same we made them to learn BASIC TAMIL as a Non-Major Elective. In addition to the core papers in Mathematics, our students learn Programming in C Language with practicals, Graph theory , Operations Research, programming in C++ and Java Programming (as electives). Also we encourage M.Sc students to take participate in conferences,seminars & workshops to take up research work in other centres of Mathematics research.
The department at present has three permanent Selection Grade Assistant Professors along with six additional qualified guest Faculty members.
